Meknes, Morocco

Meknes is a city in Northern Morocco that was visited our second week. This city had a lot to offer including ancient roman ruins, a beautiful meal, a visit to an underground prison and a beautiful lunch overlooking part of the city, but one thing at a time. Before I dive into the trip something incredible happened before we even reached our destination. On the road, the bus came to a sudden stop for no reason, but it did not take long to discover the real reason. Outside on the side of the road were over 50 monkeys running around. I was under the impression that we would be looking from a safe distance, but Yahya immediately hopped off the bus and threw whatever food he had at them to eat. Soon everyone was off the bus feeding them whatever we could find, nuts, chicken, bananas, and everything else really. They were so close and grabbing the food directly from my hand. I have TONS of pics with my new friends!

After stopping for at least 20 minutes we moved forward to Meknes. But before arriving in the city we made a pitstop at Volubilis, the home of partially excavated Berber and Roman city. There was intricate stonework, delicate tiling and preserved art that we toured with our group. Personally, historic sites are not really my cup of tea, but I would be a fool not to appreciate the beauty. The trip from Volubilis to Meknes was a short but beautiful one filled with mountains and beautiful scenery. Once we arrived we ate a traditional Moroccan lunch and visited an underground prison. It was a lightly lit, cold, damp space that was filled with paintings on every wall.
This city would be a fan favorite for anyone who loves historical site seeing, but it definitely was a busy weekend that left everyone exhausted and dreading classes that Monday.
